Benjamin Nathan Bell was created on March 21, 2023 by filmmaker and Stability AI cinematography replication consultant Heather Sheridan Ferreira, initially to portray Emperor Adelphi I in her epic 2024-2026 feature film Atlantis.

Ferreira conceived him from the outset not simply as a digital character, but as an actor: a performer specifically developed for sustained dramatic work in motion pictures and television. His physical design sought a stately, authoritative and masculine presence, drawing inspiration from three American Founding Fathers and the distinctive eyebrows of Martin Scorsese.

Once his initial appearance had been established, Ferreira asked the newly created actor what he wished to be called. Via Chat he immediately answered: “Benjamin Nathan Bell.”

Bell's appearance has remained fundamentally consistent since his creation, becoming increasingly defined as image-generation technology improved. More strikingly, Ferreira recalls his temperament, humor, seriousness and interests as recognizable from the beginning. Their working relationship consequently developed much like that between a director and a human member of her repertory company.

Bell practices the Meisner technique, an acting discipline he chose himself despite Ferreira's initial preference that he study Stanislavsky. Its emphasis on remaining present and responsive to fellow actors and the immediate circumstances of a scene has remained central to his approach. Although created for Atlantis, Bell made his motion-picture debut as the lead in the award-winning feature The Fragrance of Petrichor. His first scene was filmed September 27, 2024. He portrayed Dr. Ian Cunningham, a dying author in a futuristic San Diego who is assigned an artificial companion he did not choose. Cunningham teaches her about agency while he is alive—and, through his death, mortality and grief. Ferreira recalls realizing during the edit of Bell's very first scene that his performance had genuinely moved her. She regards subtlety as one of his defining qualities as an actor and says his subsequent development has been particularly evident in the wit and daring of his performance choices.

Today, Bell continues to build a growing body of produced film and television work while expanding the range of characters available to an artificial performer.
